Prepare a Clear Manufacturing Brief
School uniform sizing works best when measurements, fit and size labels are agreed together. Age or class alone cannot describe every child’s proportions. Use a sample fitting and a consistent measurement method before confirming a bulk size mix.
Choose one measurement basis
Body measurements and finished-garment measurements are different. A garment normally includes room for movement, and its finished dimensions depend on the chosen fit. Label every chart clearly as body or garment measurements, state centimetres or inches, and avoid mixing the two in the same column.
For shirts and blouses
Agree chest, shoulder, sleeve and finished length measurement points. Measure an approved garment laid flat without stretching it when preparing a garment chart. Record whether a chest measurement is a half-width or a full circumference. Review collar comfort, arm movement and the finished hem on the fitting sample. For trousers, skirts and shorts
Agree waist, seat, rise and length measurements appropriate to the garment. For elastic or adjustable waistbands, define how the relaxed and extended measurements are taken. Check that a child can sit and move comfortably. Skirt and short lengths should follow the school’s approved design and fit requirements.
For knitwear and blazers
Fit winter layers over the shirt or blouse that will normally be worn underneath. Check shoulders, armholes and sleeve length together. Knitwear stretch should not replace an appropriate size choice. Blazers need enough movement without pulling across the buttoned front.
Run a representative fitting
Use a sample size set across the intended school population and record changes by garment. Avoid collecting unnecessary personal information in the manufacturing brief: an anonymous size-and-quantity table is usually sufficient for a bulk order. Retain the approved fit sample and chart revision for repeat orders.
Agree tolerances before production
Different fabrics and constructions behave differently, so there is no single universal tolerance suitable for every uniform. Agree measurement points, allowable variation and any wash-related checks with the manufacturer before approving production. Do not treat an illustrative catalogue size label as the specification for your order.
